Nigerian online critic Vincent Martins Otse, who is more widely recognized by his moniker VeryDarkMan, has finally issued a response to the prominent Human Rights lawyer Femi Falana. Recently, during an insightful interview on Channels Television, Falana, who holds the distinguished title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), discussed the ongoing defamation case against VeryDarkMan. In his comments, Falana expressed his determination not only to defend his client but also to set a significant legal precedent with this particular case, highlighting the broader implications it may have on freedom of speech and online expression in Nigeria. This situation has drawn considerable attention, as it touches on important issues regarding the balance between protecting individual reputations and upholding the right to critique and express opinions in the digital age.
After the attention garnered by Femi Falana’s interview, VeryDarkMan took to Instagram to address the situation in a video response. He acknowledged that many reached out to him regarding Falana’s statements but emphasized that the focus should remain on the critical issue of corruption within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). VeryDarkMan recounted his previous efforts to expose Bobrisky’s corrupt activities, noting that despite facing significant backlash for his revelations, he remained steadfast in his mission. He articulated that the matter at hand transcends personal conflicts, stating, “To be honest, I refuse to make this about VeryDarkMan and the Falanas. It is about exposing corruption that has eaten the system so deep.” He further elaborated on a particular case where a person, after being convicted and sentenced, was allegedly influenced by a powerful figure to evade the court’s ruling by seeking refuge in a private lodge. VeryDarkMan highlighted that this situation led to an investigation involving himself, the EFCC, and Bobrisky, although one party failed to attend, hinting at the influence of the so-called godfather. He reiterated that the core issue revolves around the crime committed and not personal agendas, stating, “That recording don dey be like truth, it’s not about Falanas and VeryDarkMan.” In a show of respect towards Femi Falana, he suggested that if legal action were to be taken against him, Bobrisky should also be served a notice, as he is not the source of the contentious tape. VeryDarkMan expressed his admiration for Falana, declaring that he would prostrate in greeting if they ever met, saying, “My own be say if they’re serving me a letter, make una also serve Bobrisky the same letter because I’m not the origin of the tape. Make una no dey serve me make una leave another person wey originate am. Make una serve the two of us if una dey vex. Uncle Femi is somebody that I respect, if I see am today sef I go still lie down for ground, even if he eventually carry me go court.
